As anyone who runs their own business knows, it’s 90% hard graft, 10% fun. Motivation waxes and wanes, creativity tumbles between on and off and cash flow is always up and down.
Positivity breeds positivity and coupled with hard work a snowball effect occurs. Every day effort often leads to success. Growing a small business slowly and organically is (in my opinion) the only road to survival in this roller coaster of a ride called entrepreneurship. Evolution must take place. Like all other living things, growth is the only way forward.
Did you know that start-up businesses have a whopping 80% crash and burn rate? That’s 8 out of 10 businesses going bust in their first 18 months of trading! I’m not about to write about the ins and outs of why this is the case (this is an interiors blog after all) but I will say that not many people know what they are letting themselves in for. After all, 10% fun is teeny weeny tiny in comparison to that 90% plain old hard work.
Back in mid July I had a slither of my 10% fun with a photo shoot for new Laura Thomas Linens stock. I’ve been lucky enough to work with two amazing creatives in both hempisheres now. Jess Burges of Exposure Photographics whose work recently won numerous New Zealand awards and more recently Helen Pugh Photography, an Edinburgh Photographer whose work is truly faultless.
It was a fantastic afternoon and I do love involving my beautiful daughters in my shoots. They love dressing up and getting involved. For me, this adds another dimension to the business. They understand what ‘mummy does’ and feel as much a part of my world, as I do theirs. As the business grows, so do they and it makes me so happy to have them part of this journey with me.
