SME News is a quarterly digital publication aimed at those who own, run or assist in the running of small and medium-sized businesses within the UK. 2020 was a different year and thus making winning ‘Best Essential Oil Scented Candles Brand 2020’ that bit more special. Here at Laura Thomas Co. we focus on minimizing our carbon footprint whilst providing the best products we can. Instead of paraffins, we use essential oils to scent our plant-based natural candles.

Laura Thomas Co. Candle Range
The Coastal Candle Range here at LT Co. consists of four well-developed candles. All influenced by the surrounding environments they aim to transport you back to summer days by the beach. Firstly, a bit of history behind the range.
The Coastal Candle Range was inspired by a hot day during the heatwave of 2018 when Laura was playing beach badminton with her daughters on Gullane beach. It dawned on her that she should create a coastal candle range. A collection that reflected the scents that she could smell on the coast of East Lothian where she lives. The beach is an integral part of Laura’s life and she vows never to not live by the sea, having grown up inland. Her girls have also grown up, barefoot and carefree on beaches in New Zealand and Gullane, Scotland. Beach fires for roasting marshmallows and cooking sausage sizzles have made lasting childhood memories. Simple and slow living – a lifestyle Laura knows and loves so well.

Get to know the Range
Wood:
Laura’s inspiration behind the scent of her wood coastal candle was of the lush abundance of wood and smoke. The scent of a campfire that taps into our primal instincts. All Laura’s candle ranges are made in house in the LT workshop in North Berwick. Loving handmade and hand-poured wood coastal candle will transport you to a roaring campfire on a deserted beach. Wood has hints of sandalwood, cedarwood, cinnamon, and bergamot. It is woody and smokey, yet delicate and gentle with scents of bergamot and cinnamon. This candle is neither too masculine nor feminine. It has carefully crafted to represent the wood and smoke of a fire but also the warmth and comfort that an open fire offers. It’s Laura’s personal favourite of the range.

Fire:
Coastal candle ‘Fire’ is inspired by capturing the essence of a traditional welcoming Fire. Whether this is on a beach camp fire or at home. This candle trades heat and light for scents bitter and sweet. The delicate scent combination of Patchouli, Bergamot, Cedarwood and Palmarosa wraps you in that primal feeling of comfort, warmth and security. Fire isn’t too woody nor smokey, it has a delicate mix of masculine and feminine scents balanced and working together to create this unique scent that Laura has blended. A scent which she thinks reflects the deep comfort of a roaring fire.

Wave:
Waves are a good thing when you’re a surfer! When Laura was developing the Coastal Candle Range, she wanted to create a Wave coastal candle. The scent of her Wave candle reminds you of that clean, fresh alive feeling of being engulfed by your surroundings on a summer’s afternoon. The scents of fresh air and flowers, awakening you. Notes of Lime, Pink Grapefruit, Petitgrain and Lemon, make Wave Coastal Candle as fresh as a cool swim on a Scottish summer’s day.

Sand:
On that hot day on Gullane Beach, Laura closed her eyes. Breathing deeply in and out she thought about what she could smell at that moment. She could smell seagrasses in the air. The distinct buttery, caramel scent of sand on a super hot day and a citrusy scent in the air. In the workshop, Laura started to blend scents that reflected what she could smell on that afternoon on Gullane Beach, where it was a whopping 28 degrees. Blending notes of Bergamot, Lavender, Pine and Lemongrass, ‘Sand’ Coastal Candle was born. Capturing the feeling of Scottish sand between your toes when the scent of seagrasses and citrus is in the air. ‘Sand’ a 100% pure soy candle, transports you back in time to simpler days spent laughing by the seaside.
